DOTWIMPI
The eight (8) wastes in a process can be recalled by using the acronym DOTWIMPI. These wastes must be identified and minimized in order to improve how work is done.
Defects (errors, mistakes, repair, rework, scrap or spoilage)
Overproduction (producing more than the customer or market needs)
Transportation (movement of things, products, paperwork, digital files)
Waiting (queue time or wait time for parts, people, process or machines)
Inventory (excessive inventory — can be physical or digital)
Motion (movement of people: their hands, eyes; reaching, twisting)
Processing Excessively (doing more than customer will pay for; “gold-plating”)
Injury (physical or psychological injury to person)
